Governor Brown Ends Budget Negotiations
Governor Brown has ended (for now) budget negotiations for a June special election. This means school districts, at a minimum, must expect that an additional $2 billion will be cut from K-12 funding for 2011-12 starting July 1, 2011. Because most school districts have already assumed this funding level for 2011-12, most will not need to take additional action.
The question now becomes will the cuts be deeper? While Governor Brown has indicated just the $2 billion; the Legislative Analyst suggested that another $2.3 billion could be cut from K-12 if Proposition 98 were suspended and proportionate reductions were made.
Because there are no proposed adjustments to the budget just passed and signed, I expect that all adjustments will be part of the normal May Revision process.
